Marcus Porcius Cato, an ascending senator and notoriously capable orator, is among those who seek to tarnish Publius' shining star. He repeatedly uses political games, exaggerated allegations, and lies to undercut Publius' accomplishments and his name in one of Rome's ugliest clashes of over-sized egos.

Publius Scipio's son narrates this story that takes place over a period of twenty years, when Rome is the undisputed master of the western world. While Roman armies are winning wars in Greece and Asia, these two bitter enemies, Scipio and Cato, battle on the floor of the Roman Senate, trying to deny the glory the other has achieved. In the end, a great man is humbled by a simple and profound truth, success comes with a cost.
